Amatsu Therapy

Amatsu Therapy is an ancient Japanese healing art. It evolved over thousands of years; the traditions being passed from master to student. What began as a martial attack and defence skill has developed into knowledge of the body; what makes it work, how it breaks down, seizes up or falls apart.

Amatsu supports and encourages the natural abilities of the body to heal and regenerate, by working with the body to restore balance and regain natural / healthy postural patterns. There are four categories of Amatsu:

  • Anma - Traditional Japanese massage (soft tissues)
  • Seitai - Alignment of the ligamentous system (bones and joints)
  • Shinden Jutsu - Visceral balancing (organs and suspensory connections)
  • Kenku Jutsu - Cranial and facial balancing (head and central nervous system)

These categories / techniques are not kept separate they blend into each other during a treatment.

A treatment is known as a balance, most balances are carried out fully clothed.

The Balance

At the initial 60 minute session a detailed health and lifestyle questionnaire is completed. Subsequent sessions are between 30 and 60 minutes in length.

Amatsu is different from many other therapies because it assesses the whole body; this enables the cause of the problem to be discovered and treated not just the symptoms of illness and pain. It is effective in treating a wide range of problems.

Various techniques are used: soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, distraction, myofascial release, re-patterning, visceral mobilisation, cranial balancing and the stimulation of acupressure points. These techniques are used in varying combinations to suit the requirements of each individual.

The aim of every balance is to regain natural movement. Being able to walk, bend and reach without pain; stand, sit and kneel easily.

It is not unusual to feel dramatic changes after the initial session; sometimes it takes a couple of balances for the changes to take place.

The number of balances required in total varies according to the nature of the condition. As the body returns to a healthy state, adaptions / compensations are removed allowing for older torsions or injuries to be corrected. A regular balance is effective in maintaining good health and posture.

Individual advice and recommendations regarding posture, exercise and diet may also be given during a balance.
